  • Russell Howard

It is a tragedy that someone of 28 should die, and very ironic that Ernie was a professional athlete and a nice chap as well. Highly rated as a player he contributed greatly to the relegation struggle. Thoughts go to his family.

  • A very brave player who gave his all for Boston United FC in extremely challenging circumstances (unpaid for long periods, etc., etc). His attitude at Wrexham was superb in playing on, despite being physically sick on the pitch at the start of the second half. A true BUFC legend, RIP.

Wheather it be 5 weeks, 5 months or 5 years, any player who comes to York Street becomes part of Boston United's history and family. This includes Ernie Cooksey. Will always remember Ernie for a fantastic goal he scored against us playing for Rochdale at Spotland. He received the ball in the centre circle just inside his own half, ran at and beat our entire defence and then drilled the ball home from 18 yards. And then, of course, he shared with us one of the days that will always be remembered by those that were there - the loss at Wrexham to confirm our relegation from the Football League. Very sad news indeed and sincere condolescences to his partner, family and friends. RIP Ernie.

Such a short life for a truly great man on and off the field, sincere condolances to his closest loved ones and all his family.

I am absolutely devastated at the news of Ernie Cooksey passing away. The man is a true Oldham Athletic legend and will be sorely missed by everyone. For his committed performances alone, he is up at the top of the list of my all time favourite players. I’ll never forget the vital goals he scored for our club and the way he could climb for a header was simply unrivalled. His first game for the club away at Rochdale in a friendly match was great to watch because of the drive and passion of one person alone – Ernie Cooksey. Ernie for England!

My thoughts are with his family at this tragic time and the sad loss of a great individual who always played with a smile on his face and simply for the love of the game. So young to die, it is extremely heart-wrenching to lose such an inspirational man. OAFC should do something in remembrance of Ernie, the player that the fans loved.

I am not alone in my sadness tonight. There’s only one Ernie Cooksey! A true inspiration to us all. RIP Ernie.

I only saw him play a few times, most notably at Wrexham and he looked a 'cut above'. No one could have blamed him for finding another club as we stumbled from crisis to crisis-and he would have had no difficulty getting fixed up. But he fought to the end just as he did in his private life and after reading all the comments from people who knew him, he was obviously a genuinely nice guy. He'll be sadly missed by everyone but like his girlfriend says-he'll live on through his baby. God bless Ernie. John Fenton, Blackburn
