Boston United crashed out of the Puma Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday morning after losing 4-0 to Scunthorpe United at RAF College Cranwell.
The under-strength Pilgrims were clearly feeling the effects of their exertions in Thursday’s FA Youth Cup victory over Carlton Town and were missing Aaron Butcher, Alex Beck and Mitchell Griffiths, who were on the first team bench at Southport.
Marc Day (broken nose) and Nathan Thompson (knee) were both missing too, while Joe Braithwaite was only deemed fit enough for inclusion on the bench.
United fell behind inside five minutes and the tally was doubled 10 minutes later. Scunthorpe wrapped up their victory with two goals in the final five minutes of the game.
Youth team boss Steve Welsh handed 14-year-old Tom Hopper a late cameo and praised the young striker for his contribution, despite United’s defeat.
Boston (4-4-2): Andrew Hewitt; Jon Fairweather, Josh Mountain, Simon Ashton, Nick Jackson; Chris Baker (Callum Stocks 54), Ollie Maltby (Joe Braithwaite 54), Billy Oliver, Simon Draper; Shane Clancy, Joe Hutchinson (Tom Hopper 69). Subs (not used): Jason Field, Marc Day.
