Steve Welsh (Head of Youth)
Date of Birth: April 19, 1967
Birthplace: Glasgow
Sponsors: The Niedermeiers
Previous clubs: Wimborne Town, Cambridge United, Peterborough United, Partick Thistle, Dunfermline Athletic, Ayr United, Lincoln City, Spalding United (manager).
Steve Welsh was appointed manager of Boston United in December 2008, following a one-month stint as caretaker manager — although he returned to his head of youth development role in April 2009 at the completion of the UniBond Premier League season.
Welsh succeeded Tommy Taylor in the United hotseat and produced sufficiently good results during his caretaker stewardship to be handed the job on a full-time basis. However, he reverted to the role of heading up United’s youth and education programmes at the end of the campaign.
The Scotsman also oversees United’s Centre of Excellence structure and Bedford College educational scheme.
Welsh originally joined the Pilgrims in October 2005. At that time, he was appointed as the club’s first team coach and these duties were soon combined with the role as head of youth, after Neil Richardson left the club.
After leaving the army, Welsh enjoyed a glittering Football League career, which took in spells with Cambridge United, Peterborough United, Preston North End and Lincoln City, plus spells in his native Scotland with the likes of Partick Thistle, Dunfermline Athletic and Ayr United.
Welsh has also managed Spalding United and worked as a coach at Lincoln City.
