Rob Scott hailed the battling qualities of his Boston United players following Tuesday’s crucial away win over Retford United.
The Boston boss was delighted to see the Pilgrims extend their winning run to six matches by defeating title rivals Retford on their home soil.
Danny Sleath and Shaun Pearson netted the all-important goals either side of Chris Bettney’s equaliser.
Scott told bufc.co.uk: “I was full of praise for the players regarding their battling qualities.
“We created our own problems at times when we were put under pressure to clear our lines, but the boys cannot have the finger pointed at them that they do not stand up to the fight.
“We were disappointed to concede the goal before half-time, but mistakes invariably lead to goals. We were very pleased with the back four, who defended resolutely and the four in front of them, plus the front two, worked and worked.
“We asked Danny and Spencer for work-rate up front and they gave us that.”
Sleath drew special praise from joint manager Scott, after scoring Boston’s opener and supplying the ammunition for Shaun Pearson’s winner.
Scott added: “Danny did really well. We have to instil into him not to get in the box too early at times. He started the move and played the ball wide to Spencer and duly finished with a good header.
“I am a big fan of Sleathy. He did tremendously well for us last season (at Ilkeston). He’s great and has so much energy — it’s unbelievable.
“Danny lit the blue touch paper and he and Churchy dug really deep for us in midfield.

“In terms of the second goal, Shaun did what he does best and produced great movement to get across the centre-half. Retford were disappointed and felt there was a foul on the keeper, but I could not tell through the melee.”
Scott knows that plenty of hard work lies ahead for the Pilgrims during the remainder of the campaign, but he is looking forward to the task ahead.
“There is lots of hard work to be done between now and the end of the season,” continued Scott. “Whether we play ugly football or good football, the points are all I am concerned about.
“Everybody was looking forward to the Retford game. It’s a tough place to play and the result may make a few sit up and take notice.”
The Pilgrims travel to Curzon Ashton on Saturday in the semi-final of the UniBond League Challenge Cup.
It’s a match that the Pilgrims will take seriously and Scott is gunning for a place in the final.
He said: “If we do change the side, through injuries, bumps or bruises, we are confident that anybody who steps in will deliver for us.
“Everybody is desperate to play and do well and we want to win the cup game.”
