Defender Shaun Pearson admitted that it was a ‘superb feeling’ to score the winning goal against arch rivals Retford United on Tuesday evening.
Pearson headed the winner after 52 minutes as two of the division’s promotion chasers produced a blood and thunder encounter at Cannon Park.
It was the perfect outcome for Pearson and his Boston colleagues — particularly after the defeat against Retford at The Jakemans Stadium in September.
Pearson told bufc.co.uk: “It was a superb feeling. It was a really, really tough game and it was brilliant to get the win.
“I should have scored not so long before getting the winner, so it was pleasing to score the winning goal.
“Retford were appealing for a free-kick, but I didn’t think so. Danny Sleath produced a great delivery and I managed to get my head on the end of it.”
Retford bombarded the Boston box with a series of long balls in the closing stages, but Pearson felt the Pilgrims coped with everything thrown at them.
He continued: “Retford had lots of possession and had a couple of close calls, but Tom (Evans) was not required to make 10 outstanding saves.
“We got caught in behind once or twice when we could have squeezed up more, but we are not going to worry too much about that after a great win.
“We said before the game that we owed Retford one, because it was gutting to lose the way we did (in September). It was a superb result on Tuesday.”
The Pilgrims take a break from league action to face Curzon Ashton initially in the UniBond League Challenge Cup, before contesting the Lincolnshire Senior Shield final against Grantham Town.
“We aim to keep the run going,” added Pearson. “The cup games are important and will hopefully spur us on even further in the league and ensure we are battling for the top spot right until the end of the season.
“We spoke after the Kendal defeat about needing to put a run together, even to have a realistic chance of making the play-offs at the time.
“Not that many sides can catch us now, so the boys deserve a lot of credit for the run we have been on. Hopefully we can keep it going until the end of the season.”
